How it is calculated

Adding GST: GST = price × 10 ÷ 100 · total = price + GST

GST inside a GST-inclusive price: GST = total ÷ 11 · price excluding GST = total − GST (10 ÷ 110 simplifies to 1 ÷ 11).

Worked example: A$100 excluding GST → GST A$10.00 → A$110.00. The other way: A$110 ÷ 11 = A$10.00 GST, A$100.00 excluding GST.

No-ABN withholding

The ATO's rule for the business paying the invoice: if a supplier does not provide an ABN, you generally withhold the top rate of tax from the payment — 47% — and pay it to the ATO, unless the total payment is A$75 or less excluding GST or another exception applies (for example the supplier gives you a Statement by a supplier form). withheld = total payment × 47 ÷ 100

Worked example: a A$1,000 invoice from a supplier with no ABN → withhold A$470.00 → pay the supplier A$530.00.
Common questions
How do I work out the GST in a price that includes GST?
Divide by 11. A A$110 price includes A$10 GST. That is the arithmetic of a 10% rate: 10 ÷ 110 = 1 ÷ 11.
Do I have to charge GST?
Only if you are registered for GST. The ATO sets the registration turnover threshold — check ato.gov.au for the current figure before you decide.
What is no-ABN withholding?
If a supplier does not quote an ABN on their invoice, the business paying them generally withholds the top rate of tax — 47% — from the payment and sends it to the ATO, unless the payment is A$75 or less excluding GST or another exception applies, such as the supplier providing a "Statement by a supplier" form.
Does GST vary by state?
No. GST is one rate of 10% across Australia.
What does GlideQuote put on an Australian tax invoice?
The document is headed "Tax Invoice", shows your ABN and the GST on the taxable lines, and prints your business details, logo and signature on the PDF.
